KUALA LUMPUR 29 JULAI : Gerakan Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM) menolak penafian isteri Perdana Menteri, Rosmah Mansor bahawa beliau bukan pemilik sebentuk cincin berlian RM24 juta yang diimport dari Amerika Syarikat.

Pengerusinya Badrul Hisham Shaharin berkata penafian "bongkak dan angkuh" Rosmah tidak boleh diterima kerana ia tidak menangani isu dokumen-dokumen Kastam bersabit cincin itu yang dikemukakan oleh SAMM kepada Suruhanajaya Pencegahan Rasuah Malaysia (SPRM) dua minggu lalu.

Menurut Badrul, tabiat boros Rosmah akhirnya akan memberi kesan kepada pentadbiran negara yang berada di bawah naungan suaminya sendiri.

Beliau berkata ada bukti jelas dalam rekod kastam menunjukkan kemasukan sebentuk cincin berharga lebih RM24 juta pada 16 April lalu atas nama beliau sebagai penerima.

"Sikap boros dan sombong beliau yang kita lihat banyak sangat menghancurkan negara ini dan kerana itu Rosmah boleh cakap apa sahaja seperti juga Imelda Marcos yang langsung tidak mempedulikan protes dan suara rakyat. India's best-known Islamic seminary has sacked its reformist leader just months after he took over for praising a Hindu nationalist politician.

Darul Uloom Deoband's vice-chancellor Ghulam Mohammed Vastanvi had been criticised for praising Bharatiya Janata Party politician Narendra Modi.

Mr Modi is the chief minister of the western state of Gujarat.

He is widely blamed for doing nothing to stop the 2002 riots in which more than 1,000 Muslims were killed.

Mr Vastanvi had pledged to update the seminary's curriculum and modernise the institution when he took over in January.

His praise for Mr Modi's development policies earned him the ire of conservatives and led to protests.

"Maulana Vastanvi has been removed from the post of vice-chancellor by Majlis-e-Shoora (governing council) of the seminary," Press Trust of India quoted Maulana Abdul Qasim Nomani, the new vice-chancellor, as saying.

Mr Vastanvi said he was a victim of a conspiracy.

Correspondents say Darul Uloom Deoband is one of the most respected Islamic theological schools in the region.

Australia and Malaysia sign refugee swap agreement

Australian and Malaysian officials have signed a controversial deal intended to stem the flow of asylum seekers travelling to Australia by boat.

The deal allows Australia to send 800 asylum seekers to Malaysia. In return, Australia will take 4,000 refugees from Malaysia over the next four years.

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard said it would "smash the business model of people smugglers".

But some rights groups in both counties have objected to the agreement.

Rights group Amnesty International has raised concerns that asylum seekers are routinely mistreated in Malaysia.

The group says refugees are "frequently caged in appalling conditions, exploited and caned".

Malaysia, which is home to tens of thousands of illegal migrants, is not a signatory to the UN Refugee Convention and has not ratified the UN Convention against Torture.

But Malaysia's Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein, who signed the deal in Kuala Lumpur, said asylum seekers would be treated according to the UN refugee agency's international standards.

"The allegation that Malaysia is not fair toward refugees in this country is completely untrue," he said.

Ms Gillard also stressed that the asylum seekers would be treated properly.

"To ensure the welfare of the asylum seekers transferred, there will be an overseeing committee that will include members of the UNHCR [UN refugee agency]," she said.

The UNHCR, which was not a signatory to the deal, said in a statement it would prefer Australia to deal with migrants on its own territory.

Under the terms of the agreement Australia has agreed to pay all the costs of the transfers.

The extra 4,000 refugees Australia has agreed to accept are immigrants who are already in Malaysia.The issue of asylum seekers has proved highly controversial for successive Australian governments.

Last week, refugee claimants held at the Christmas Island detention staged several nights of protests to demand better conditions and treatment.

Local media also reported in recent days a mass hunger strike at a Queensland detention centre, a roof-top protest at Darwin's detention centre, and the interception of another boat carrying 47 asylum seekers off the Australian coast.

Australia currently has more than 6,000 asylum seekers in detention, originating from countries including Iran, Iraq, Vietnam, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan.

The UN has previously criticised Australia for holding all asylum seekers while their applications are assessed.

The migrants are held for months at the Christmas Island centre, about 1,500 miles (2,400km) from the Australian mainland, and in other facilities.

Malaysian news agency Bernama reports that the French Atelier des Parfums, presenting its halal non-alcoholic fragrances at the Seventh Malaysia International Halal Showcase, June 23-27, has set up a new center in the country, from where they plan to target Muslim consumers all over the world.

"We are now able to bring world-class halal perfume, created in France and manufactured in Malaysia, to all Muslims around the world at affordable prices," Mustaffa Omar, general manager of the Malaysian outpost of the company located in Sri Damansar, said.

"We are giving them modern, fresh, new trendy scents that have never been created before and are not only by far superior to the existing halal fragrances on the market but also give consumers the security to use real halal certified products."

Atelier des Parfums president and CEO, Hermann J. Portner told Bernama that he was looking to help Malaysia, the host of the leading halal product showcase, become the global center for halal cosmetics and fragrances.

However, there is a debate on the internet as to whether fragrances may contain alcohol or not in order to be considered 'halal', meaning 'lawful' in Islamic terms. Several have pointed out that in countries that are usually keen to enforce 'halal' goods - and to oppose those considered 'haram' or 'unlawful' - such as Saudi Arabia, fragrances containing alcohol are still commonly sold.

For those uncertain whether to use conventional fragrances or cosmetics: it has been widely agreed that products don't necessarily need to carry an official halal certificate in order to be 'allowed.' Anything labeled 'organic' or 'vegan' or 'natural' is fine, as long as it is free of alcohol, pork derivatives, and doesn't rely on animal testing.

KANGAR: Conclusions made by the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into Teoh Beng Hock's death should not be questioned as this will only defeat its purpose, said Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

The Prime Minister said the RCI was an independent body, which had been set up with the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong's consent and made up of individuals with high credibility to investigate the matter openly.

“What is the purpose of setting up the RCI if its findings are questioned? There are groups which questioned it because they are unhappy with the findings.

“They have made their own conclusion and they wanted the RCI's report to reflect their thinking and demands. That is unfair
“The truth remains the truth whether it is bitter or easy for us to accept. We can't deny the truth,” he said after meeting the Perlis Barisan Nasional leaders yesterday.

The Commission had concluded that Teoh was driven to commit suicide due to intensive interrogation by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers.

The 124-page report had singled out three MACC officers.

On demands that the three officers be charged as soon as possible, Najib said investigations needed to be carried out first to determine the exact offences committed by them.

“There is a need to identify if they had violated the law or breached administrative procedures. Once this has been determined, appropriate action can be taken,” he said.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz had said that the Government wanted the three MACC officers charged and that an investigation paper be opened based on the report's findings.

Teoh, 30, the political secretary to Seri Kembangan assemblyman Ean Yong Hian Wah, was found dead on July 16, 2009, on the fifth floor corridor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam after giving a statement at the Selangor MACC office on the 14th floor of the same building.

The setting up of the commission was announced by Najib on Jan 26 after the Coroner's Court delivered an open verdict.

KOTA TINGGI, July 24 (Bernama) -- The government is considering replacing the 10 MiG-29 aircraft of the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) with the Eurofighter Typhoon multi-role combat aircraft (MRCA).

Minister of Defence Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the service period of the Russian-made MiG-29s had ended and they needed to be replaced.

He said his ministry was now evaluating the Eurofighter Typhoon MRCA fighter jet which cost RM3 billion each for its capabilities and specifications.

"The Eurofighter is admittedly the best fighter jet and as it is expensive, we need to evaluate in detail," he told reporters after closing an Umno membership drive organised by Tenggara Umno here Sunday.

However, he said the purchase of the aircraft would depend on the financial capability of the government, more so with the country undergoing rapid development.

The ministry was also assessing other MRCA jet fighters including the Sukhoi SU-35, FA-18 Super Hornet and JAS Gripen, he added.

"SPRM dan kerajaan mesti memikul tanggungjawab untuk keselamatan dan hak asasi semua nyawa yang di dalam tahanannya. Apa-apa yang berlaku di agensi kerajaan sehingga menyebabkan kematian boleh dianggap sebagai satu pembunuhan atau homisid,” kata mereka.

NGO lain yang terlibat alah Suaram, Youth For Change dan Dewan Perhimpunan Cina Kuala Lumpur dan Selangor.

Menurut mereka laporan setebal 124 mukasurat yang didedahkan semalam itu membuktikan bahawa Teoh belum dibebaskan pada pagi 16 Julai 2009 seperti yang didakwa oleh SPRM dan masih secara paksa dalam tahanan SPRM.

Aid reaches drought victims in Islamist area of Somalia

The Red Cross says it has delivered food into one of Somalia's worst hit drought areas, controlled by the Islamist militant group al-Shabab.

Working through a local committee, the Red Cross delivered by lorry food for 24,000 people.

The badly needed aid was distributed to families in the town of Baardhere, north-west of the capital Mogadishu.

But the World Food Programme says it cannot reach 2.2m people inside Somalia.

The food was delivered by the Red Cross was sent in from Mogadishu and given to locals and others who had come to the town to escape the famine.

The delivery took place on Saturday, and the Red Cross are now moving on to other areas.

The aid consisted of beans, rice and oil - enough rations to last a family one month.

This indicates that although al-Shabab has halted food aid by some agencies in areas they control, other agencies can operate in their territory.
Banned aid

This is vital, if the flow of Somalis into neighbouring Kenya and Ethiopia is to be reduced.

The World Food Programme is among the agencies banned by the Islamists.

Executive Director Josette Sheeran, who is in the area, says this is limiting the aid they can provide.

"The epicentre of this famine and the drought is in Somalia," says Ms Sheeran.

"We are able to reach about 1.5m people in Somalia but there is about 2.2m million that are not being able to be reached directly by humanitarian workers."

But while the World Food Programme is on the banned list, others like the Red Cross and Medecins Sans Frontiers, are still working in al-Shabab territory.

Singer Amy Winehouse, 27, has been found dead at her home, the Press Association has reported.

Belgian ban on full veils comes into force

A law has come into force in Belgium banning women from wearing the full Islamic veil in public.

The country is the second European Union nation after France to enforce such a ban. Offenders face a fine of 137.5 euros (£121; $197) and up to seven days in jail.

Two women who wear full veils launched an immediate court challenge, saying the law is discriminatory.

France, home to Europe's biggest Muslim population, enforced its ban in April.

Belgium's law bans any clothing that obscures the identity of the wearer in places like parks and on the street.

It was passed almost unanimously by the lower house of parliament in April 2010.

MPs voted with only two abstentions to back the legislation on the grounds of security, to allow police to identify people.

Other MPs said that full face veils such as the burka or the niqab were a symbol of the oppression of women. But critics of the law say it could end up excluding women, leaving those who do wear the full veil trapped in their homes.

And they say the measures are over the top - estimates suggest only a few dozen women wear this kind of veil in Belgium, out of a Muslim population of about half a million.

"We consider the law a disproportionate intrusion into fundamental rights such as the freedom of religion and expression," Ines Wouters, the lawyer representing the two women challenging the ban, told the newspaper La Libre.

She has taken their case to Belgium's constitutional court, where she will request a suspension of the law, AFP news agency reported.

abaikan,” kata seorang gadis yang terjebak dalam kegiatan urut batin biarpun cita-cita asalnya mahu mewarisi kepakaran neneknya dalam bidang urut tradisional.

Berbekalkan wajah jelita dan tubuh gebu, gadis tukang urut berusia 21 tahun itu yang hanya mahu dikenali sebagai Su berkata, dia sebelum ini belajar ilmu urut tradisional daripada neneknya yang juga seorang bidan berpengalaman.

Menurutnya, harapan neneknya dan dia sendiri ketika itu ialah untuk menjadi seorang tukang urut tradisional khususnya untuk wanita baru bersalin. “Sejak kecil saya suka melihat nenek mengurut wanita baru bersalin dan dari situ timbul minat saya untuk mewarisi kerjayanya,” katanya yang ditemui Harian Metro di sebuah pusat urut di pinggir ibu kota.

Su berkata, ketika berusia 15 tahun, neneknya yang sudah tua menurunkan ilmu perubatan dan urut tradisional itu kepadanya.

“Pada masa sama dia berpesan agar saya tidak melanggar pantang larang termasuk menyalahgunakan ilmu ini untuk tujuan urutan lain, tetapi demi mendapat wang dengan cara mudah, saya kini melanggar amanatnya.

“Pada mulanya saya mengurut wanita lepas bersalin di rumah saya di Perak, tetapi pendapatan diterima tidak mencukupi untuk perbelanjaan harian, menyebabkan saya memberanikan diri berhijrah ke Kuala Lumpur,” katanya.

Menurut Su, pada mulanya, dia bekerja di Damansara, dekat Petaling Jaya dan ketika itu dia hanya menawarkan khidmat urut badan, kaki dan refleksologi pada harga RM50 bagi satu sesi, tetapi akibat pengaruh beberapa rakan sekerja, dia mula berminat dalam urutan seks.
Tanpa berselindung, Su mengakui kegiatan memberikan khidmat urut batin akhirnya menyebabkan dia tergelincir lebih jauh apabila turut memberikan khidmat seks kepada lelaki.
“Selepas mencuba urutan batin buat pertama kali, saya jadi seronok terutama apabila dapat pendapatan lumayan dan sejak itu, ia menjadi rutin harian saya melayan lelaki ketagih urutan batin,” katanya.

“Namun, saya agak berhati-hati memilih pelanggan bagi mengelak penyakit kelamin dan hanya bersedia menyerahkan tubuh kepada pelanggan yang memenuhi cita rasa saya,” katanya.

Su berkata, kini selepas lebih tiga tahun bergelumang dalam kegiatan tidak bermoral itu dia mempunyai ramai pelanggan tetap dan pendapatan diterima lebih lumayan.

Menurutnya, untuk khidmat urut batin dia mengenakan bayaran tambahan antara RM30 hingga RM50 manakala untuk khidmat seks bayaran dikenakannya RM200.

Apabila ditanya sampai bila dia mahu melakukan kerja jijik itu, Su hanya menggeleng kepala dan berkata: “Memang terlintas dalam fikiran saya untuk berhenti, tetapi disebabkan tiada pendidikan tinggi dan kebolehan lain, buat masa ini hanya kerja ini saya tahu.” Mengenai pantang larang neneknya yang dilanggar, Su berkata, setakat ini tiada kesan negatif terhadap dirinya dan berharap keadaan itu berterusan.

Orang dok mengutuk tiap-tiap hari, anak nak bersedap-sedap pun tibai duit rakyat. Depa peduli apa, tengah-tengah orang dok bising fasal beg tangan, orang yang berlegar di sekitar istana depa bikin cerita bahawa masuk lagi beg tangan import. Tu tak kira lagi sok sek-sok sek depa tentang kemasukan berlian bernilai RM13 juta sebulan dua yang lalu. Gila-gila punya cerita. Kita takat bersembang fasal khabar angin dari istana depa je la. Bukti tak ada.

Khabar angin itu mungkin bohong. Tetapi persoalannya, mengapa orang yang berlegar di istana depa hentam sakan? Adakah depa geram sangat? Punyalah bersungguh depa menghentam, siap cerita fasal bomoh Hindu lagi.

Dalam lebih kurang seminggu ni, saya hampir-hampir tak tengok Internet. Dok sibuk hal lain.

Selepas berpindah dari rumah dahulu yang saya sewa kira-kira 17 tahun sebab tuan rumah nak duduk balik rumah dia, ni nak pindah balik ke Taman Koperasi Polis. Nak duduk balik dekat rumah mak mertua. Senang dan dekat sikit isteri saya nak jaga dan menyantuni mak dia. Bila nak pindah, banyak nak kena siap, terutama duit. Saya dah kata kat isteri saya, bila kita ada duit sikit nanti dan ada rumah kosong dekat rumah mak, kita balik dekat mak. Tak dan nak ada duit barang sekepiang, tiba-tiba dah ada rumah kosong.

Tak rebut rumah tu, bukan senang nak ada rumah kosong dekat-dekat rumah mak. Nak buat lagu mana. Tak dak duit pun nak kena berlagak macam orang ada duit - senang-senang nak mintak masuk rumah orang walaupun tak dak duit. Mampoih!

Tak pa. Tu hal peribadi saya. Saja saya cerita sebab musabab mengapa saya tak main internet dalam seminggu ni. Dalam pada tak main Internet, tiba-tiba kawan baik telefon dan bagi tau tentang posting yang bertajuk "Raya sakan: Imelda Rosmah dan cincin nilai RM24.4 juta".

Saya dah dengar cerita tu lama dah. Tinggal lagi, angka yang diberitahu kepada saya RM13 juta. Dalam blog Rakyat Marhaen kata RM24.4 juta.

Saya tak berani nak tulis sakan perbuatan terkutuk itu sebab tak ada bukti. Walaupun telah didedahkan oleh blog tersebut siap dengan print screen, saya masih berharap cerita itu tak betul. Sungguh, saya memang harap cerita tak betul. Sebab kalau betul, memang sah Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor dan suaminya, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak adalah penyamun dan perompak wang rakyat. Itu kalau betul. Sebab itulah saya harap tak betul.

Saya berharap mereka akan dapat menafikan tanpa sebarang keraguan. Jangan buat kelaku yang semakin menguatkan rasa tak percaya orang macam dalam kes pembunuhan Altantuya Shaariibuu. Semakin ramai yang semakin tak percaya penafian depa bahawa depa tak terlibat.

Harap tak betul. Sebab kalau betul, adalah menjadi kewajipan orang-orang Islam yang Allah s.w.t. wajibkan amar ma'ruf nahi munkar untuk memohon kepada-Nya supaya Ia melaknati Najib dan isterinya. Apa lagi yang Najib tak buat? Tak kisahlah Najib tak mengaku keluarganya terlibat dalam pembunuhan Altantuya. Yang sah, Allahyarham Othman Talib mati dibunuh di Felda Lubok Merbau akibat ucapan dan hasutan Najib di situ dalam pilihan raya kecil Padang Terap pada tahun 1985. Terbaru, Allahyarham Baharudin Ahmad terbunuh akibat sesak nafas selepas terkena gas pemedih mata yang ditembak polis di bawah pemerintahan Najib (saya mohon maaf kepada keluarganya kerana hanya dapat ziarah sekejap di Surau Muqorrobin sebab ada kerja)..

Dengan penyokong seciput 2830 orang (setakat 5.23 petang 11/7/11), admin laman FB "1 Juta Rakyat Malaysia Menyokong Kepimpinan DS Najib" menghiburkan mimpinya yang tak kesampaian dengan menulis penglipurlara "walaupun nilainya sedikit tapi kecil-kecil cili padi"!

Dan, kalau anda belum join lagi laman "100,000 People Request Najib Tun Razak Resignation", join segera! Malaysiakini hari ini melaporkan, "hanya 48 jam selepas dimulakan, jumlah itu sudah melepasi sasaran yang 100,000 yang ditetapkan sebelum ini."

Mengenai himpunan rakyat Sabtu lalu (9 Julai yang bersejarah!), untuk diri saya sendiri, kali inilah yang saya rasa paling tak happening. Sebaik sampai ke tempat orang berhimpun di sekitar Maju Junction dan Chow Kit (saya pergi dah dalam pukul 1 lebih dah sebab pagi tu kena tolong isteri mengajar), kawan-kawan yang bawa saya dah pesan, "hang jangan lebih-lebih, bakaq. Jangan menjerit. Jangan nak berkejar-kejar". Mentang-mentanglah saya baru keluar wad CCU akibat serangan jantung!

Dalam lagu tu pun, dapat juga saya berjalan kaki pergi balik dari Jalan Raja Abdullah di Kampung Baru sehingga ke kawasan sekitar KLCC untuk turut berada. Alahai, hanya turut berada aku kali ini. Dulu-dulu, aku yang duduk depan buat human wall dan tolak perisai FRU. Saya sungguh-sungguh memohon maaf kepada semua rakyat yang berani dan dimangsakan keganasan polis kerana kali ini hanya memondan dalam perhimpunan Bersih Sabtu lalu. Tu pun aku buat pekak pada cakap mak mertua yang berkali-kali pesan supaya jangan pergi dan buat tak endah cakap adik ipar saya - satu-satunya doktor dalam keluarga kami.

Walaupun saya hanya memondan dalam perhimpunan Bersih kali ini kerana terbawa-bawa sangat perasaan takut mampoih akibat serangan jantung kalau galak sangat berkejar-kejar, banyak perkara yang menggembirakan hati saya:

1. Penghibur hati saya yang paling utama ialah apabila melihat rakyat bertindak sendiri tanpa menunggu pemimpin memandangkan ramai yang bergelar pemimpin awal-awal lagi dah kena tangkap. Perhimpunan raksaksa di sekitar KLCC misalnya dah dekat nak habis baru Dr Mohd Hatta Md Ramli dapat menggabungkan diri dengan mereka. And, it was happening!

2. Ramai yang bersetuju bahawa 75 peratus yang berhimpun adalah anak-anak muda. The truh has a future! (Sebagai ayah, jahat-jahat aku pun, saya teringat anak saya yang turut berhimpun, tapi tak tau di mana dia dan kawan-kawannya berkumpul. Saya sms, "Baqir katne?" Lama kemudian dia reply. Dia hanya tulis "Terbaik". Saya fikir tak perlu lagi saya merasa bimbang. Biarlah dia belajar mengharungi gas pemedih mata, air beracun dan masuk lokap, kata hati saya)

3. Apabila membaca posting Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir bertajuk "My Bersih 2.0 Experience" (komen-komen di sini). Bongok dan kelakar gila kalau siapa-siapa tuduh Marina menyokong pembangkang. Nak tunggu Marina sokong PAS misalnya, tunggulah sehingga babi boleh terbang!

Marina bukan penyokong pembangkang. Saya yakin dia hanya menyokong perjuangan membersihkan pilihan raya negara ini.

Walau tak ada kaitan, teringat saya sembang saya dengannya. Lama dah, tak ingat bila. Lebih kurang saya kata, "Datin, banyak pemikiran Datin yang saya meluat (kasaq sungguh, saya guna perkataan meluat). Tapi as a person, saya hormat sangat kat Datin sebab saya rasa Datin ni very compassionate". Dia jawab balik (kalau tak silap dalam Bahasa Inggeris) dan lebih kurang dia kata, "bakaq, tak sama pendapat tak semestinya tak boleh berkawan". Masa anak saya kembali ke pangkuan Penciptanya Yang Maha Pengampun, Marina adalah antara yang paling awal menghantar sms mengucapkan takziah kepada saya walaupun beliau pada masa itu pulang ke kampung suaminya di Indonesia menghadiri pengebumian ibu mertuanya.

4. Bila balik rumah, dua anak perempuan saya yang dok tengok laptop masing-masing gelak sampai saya marah sebab malu kat jiran sebab depa gelak kuat sangat. Saya tanya pasai apa gelak kuat sangat? Anak saya yang sulung baca petikan berita di bawah:
3.40pm: Taman Tasik Titiwangsa - Kira-kira 20 ahli PERKASA dilihat di sebuah restoran di sini. Mereka hanya mengikuti perkembangan perhimpunan BERSIH melalui siaran televisyen.Namun presiden kumpulan itu, Ibrahim Ali dan timbalannya langsung tidak kelihatan.

3.22pm: Bukit Bintang - 300 penyokong Pemuda Umno di Jalan Bukit Bintang di depan Hotel Federal mula bersurai selepas mengadakan rundingan dengan pihak polis. Sambil mendakwa telah mencapai kemenangan moral - walaupun hanya mampu bergerak 200 meter sepanjang Jalan Bukit Bintang - masih jauh dari destinasi mereka di Stadium Merdeka - Exco Pemuda Umno, Megat Omardin berkata mesej mereka sudah disampaikan.
Teringat saya kata-kata saya kat kawan-kawan masa minum di Restoran Thaqwa, "puak tu makan upah. Tak upah jangan harap depa nak datang (konon sampai beribu-ribu orang)".

Hey everybody! Yes I'm back with another really steamy guy. I don't know if you recognize him, but Thomas will be in the new movie Prom! I know right look at that luscious hair. It's totally gorgeous. I couldn't help but notice him as I watched the previews for this movie. This will kind of be his debut role since he's only had small parts in movies such as Twelve and The Forbidden Kingdom. I absolutely cannot wait until this movie comes out. I know I'll be sitting in the movie theater drooling at Thomas, but I doubt I'll be the only one. By the way Thomas will be in the upcoming movie Dark Shadows playing Barnabas Collins who is Johnny Depp when he was younger. How cool and perfectly cast also. Don't forget to see Prom it is premiering on April 29, 2011.

PETALING JAYA, July 23 — Pakatan Rakyat (PR) seized on the sudden deportation of William Bourdon last night to renew scrutiny into billion-ringgit defence contracts said to be as scandalous as the RM7 billion Scorpene submarine deal that the lawyer was pursuing in France.

PR lawmakers told an audience of 500 here last night that the French lawyer’s deportation showed the Najib administration wanted to keep facts about defence deals hidden.

“We know French police have obtained quite crucial documents, linking (Datuk Seri) Najib Razak, our beloved prime minister himself. That is why irrational actions were taken today,” said PKR vice president Nurul Izzah Anwar.The Lembah Pantai MP added, “the fact that the Malaysian government has kicked Bourdon out most dishonourably today has helped our cause even more.” The French lawyer was held in the aircraft by three immigration officers when he landed in Sepang from Penang yesterday morning,

She said that Bourdon’s deportation and Barisan Nasional’s (BN) clampdown on the July 9 Bersih rally for free and fair elections raised questions of Najib’s “pronouncements of transformation.”

DAP publicity chief Tony Pua spent 20 minutes recounting three other defence deals made over the past three years totalling RM16 billion for vehicles that cost Malaysia far more than other countries.

The Petaling Jaya Utara MP told his constituents that this included the RM2.3 billion for 12 Eurocopter EC725 helicopters, RM6 billion for six offshore patrol vessels (OPV) and RM7.8 billion for 257 armoured personnel carriers.

He said that questions over these deals in the media or in Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee were met with the repeated refrain of “itu rahsia (that is secret). The armed forces and defence ministry officials insisted they could not expose military secrets to the rest of the world.”

According to Pua, Brazil had purchased the Eurocopters at just RM82 million per unit as opposed to RM190 million paid by Malaysia, while New Zealand paid just RM240 million per OPV versus the RM1 billion each paid by Malaysia.

He also pointed out that the 257 armoured vehicles are to be supplied by local conglomerate DRB-Hicom, who in turn had bought the vehicles from a Turkish firm for just RM1.9 billion, only a quarter of the price that Malaysian taxpayers would fork out eventually.

The purchase of two submarines from French defence company DCNS in 2002 was made when Najib was still defence minister and a company run by Abdul Razak Baginda, said to be a close aide of the then-deputy prime minister, was reported to have received commissions of over RM500 million from the deal.

Human rights groups and opposition parties here also linked the episode to the 2006 murder of Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu.

Bourdon had arrived here from Penang, where he spoke at a fundraiser organised by rights group Suaram regarding the Scorpene submarine deal and was scheduled to speak at last night’s event.

In December 2009, Suaram filed a complaint with the French courts asking for access to information regarding government contracts signed with Abdul Razak’s Perimekar Sdn Bhd and other information classified as official secrets in Malaysia.

The French courts accepted the request to investigate claims of graft in the RM500 million payment from DCNS to Perimekar.

Malaysian Prime Minister Defends Muzzling of Protests

LONDON — If the Malaysian government allowed street demonstrations of the kind seen in Kuala Lumpur last weekend, the country would face protracted instability, Prime Minister Najib Razak said Wednesday.

Mr. Najib spoke after thousands of advocates of electoral change defied a government ban and held a large street protest Saturday, during which the police fired tear gas and water cannons and arrested nearly 1,700 demonstrators.

“Public order is very important in Malaysia because if we allow for street demonstrations, there’s no end to it, there will be another group that wants to demonstrate,” Mr. Najib told a small group of international reporters Wednesday in London, where he was to meet the British prime minister and attend an investment conference.

If protests are not controlled, “you will get a situation in which more and more of these street demonstrations will take place in Malaysia,” he said.

On Thursday in Kuala Lumpur, the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia announced that it planned to hold an inquiry into police conduct during the rally. The police response has been condemned by rights advocates in Malaysia and abroad, including the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Muhammad Sha’ani Abdullah, a member of the Malaysian commission, said Thursday that it decided to act after receiving complaints from the public, protest organizers and rights groups. “We are also acting on media reports and our own observations during the rally,” he said.

He said that details of the inquiry would be determined by Tuesday.

In London, Mr. Najib defended the police, saying they had used “minimum force, and there was no physical contact at all with the demonstrators.” The scale of the protest, he added, was exaggerated, and “a maximum of 15,000” people turned up. The police put the number at 5,000 to 6,000, while protest organizers contended it was 50,000.

The government had barred the protesters from gathering in Kuala Lumpur but said they could hold a rally outside the capital. The protest leaders insisted that it be held at Merdeka Stadium in the city, however.

“I was saddened by the fact that they didn’t accept the government’s offer,” Mr. Najib said. “They still insisted on marching through the streets, because I think they wanted to get maximum publicity and secondly challenge authority in the hope that they can make this an issue.”

The protest movement, led by the Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections, or Bersih, sees the situation differently. An amalgam of civic groups advocating changes in electoral laws, Bersih was declared illegal on July 1, after which hundreds of activists were arrested, though most have since been released. All those arrested on Saturday were released later that night.

The Malaysian Bar Council said in a report Tuesday that its monitors witnessed the police using tear gas and water cannons “arbitrarily, indiscriminately and excessively” and “beating, hitting and kicking the rally participants.” The protesters, it said, acted in “peaceful and calm manner,” except for an incident in which “one or more” people threw plastic bottles at a television reporter.

The Malaysian home minister, Hishammuddin Hussein, said Monday that the police force would review recordings of the incidents and that appropriate action would be taken if the police were found to have acted improperly. He also said that action would be taken against any journalists who were found to have sensationalized their reports with inaccurate information, reported The Star, a newspaper.

Phil Robertson, deputy Asia director at Human Rights Watch, said Thursday: “The Malaysian authorities’ crushing of Bersih’s march shows that when basic liberties compete with the entrenched power of the state, the government is quick to throw respect for human rights out the window.”- The New York Times

Kevin Pietersen scored a brilliant double hundred as England took advantage of the absence of India seamer Zaheer Khan to assume a dominant position after two days of the first Test at Lord's.

Despite struggling to find his characteristic fluency, and two reprieves from the third umpire, Pietersen ground his way to a century off 216 balls - but his second ton was a different story, taking just 110 balls as he became the fourth fastest England batsman to pass 6,000 Test runs.

The 31-year-old shared in century partnerships with Ian Bell (45) and Matt Prior (71) and added a quickfire 49 in four overs with Graeme Swann as England raised the tempo in the final hour of play before declaring on 474-8.

It left India openers Gautam Gambhir and Abhinav Mukund a tricky final half hour, but they survived six overs to reach 17-0.

The only bright spot on a difficult day for the tourists was the performance of seamer Praveen Kumar, who recorded figures of 5-106 from 40.3 overs. The 24-year-old was forced to spearhead the India attack after the tourists confirmed that Zaheer Khan would be unable to bowl until the second innings at the earliest because of a hamstring problem.

Buoyed by that news, England started the day on 127-2, intent on posting an imposing first innings score.

Jonathan Trott reached 70 before playing across the line to a skidding delivery from Kumar and being trapped leg before wicket.

Then came one of the talking points of the day as Pietersen clipped Kumar off his legs and was caught low by Rahul Dravid at leg slip. Umpire Billy Bowden raised the finger but Pietersen referred the decision to the television official, who gave him the benefit of the doubt because replays appeared to show the ball brushing the ground.

Soon after lunch, Mahendra Singh Dhoni - briefly handing wicket-keeping duties to Rahul Dravid to send down eight overs of medium pace - thought he had removed Pietersen caught behind, but the decision was rightly overturned on review.

Bell, meanwhile. picked up where he left off in the Sri Lanka series, unfurling his full range of elegant cuts, sweeps and drives.

Pietersen reached his 18th Test hundred with a straight four off Ishant Sharma, but soon afterwards England were on the back foot as Bell and Eoin Morgan fell in quick succession, both caught behind off Kumar.

With Pietersen still battling with his game, Prior took on the role of aggressor in compiling a quickfire half-century, before Kumar returned to dismiss him and Stuart Broad with successive balls.

Having passed 150 for the fifth time in Tests, Pietersen finally broke the shackles, thrilling the crowd with some sensational hitting to advance to 202 in just 25 more balls.

That was the cue for Andrew Strauss to declare, but with James Anderson and Chris Tremlett struggling to find a consistent line, India reached stumps with all 10 wickets intact.

Malaysias Political Awakening: A Call for US Leadership

A Malaysian recently wrote to me, Most Americans dont know or even care where Malaysia is. Even among the so-called foreign policy elite, little attention is paid to Malaysia. There are few American academics who specialize in domestic Malaysian politics, and except for hosting visits by senior Malaysian leaders, think tanks and universities hold few Malaysia-themed programs. US newspaper and magazine reports are few, with most articles focusing on tourism and the delights of Malaysian cuisine. As a result, there is a tendency among Americans to hold an idealized (and outdated) image of Malaysia as a successful multi-racial and multi-religious paradise, an Asian economic dynamo, and a stable and moderate Muslim democracy. As a result of this deficit of informed analysis of Malaysia, there has been a failure to notice the internal political and economic changes unfolding within Malaysia over the past few years. The reality today, as one Australian expert puts it, is that the situation is the most fluid and dangerous in Malaysias history.

The Events of July 9 A Date for the History Books

Because of this attention shortfall, the events of July 9, 2011 came as a surprise. On that day, tens of thousands of Malaysianswho have been ranked on Hofstedes Power Distance Index as the most submissive to authority of any people in the worldchose to defy their government! and joi n a Walk for Democracy. They heeded the call of Bersih 2.0, a coalition of 62 non-governmental organizations that calls for free and fair elections. In the days before the rally, the Malaysian government cracked down. It rounded up 200 leaders associated with the movement, claiming that they were waging war against the King and planning to overthrow the government. It declared both the Bersih coalition and the planned rally illegal, and in a truly bizarre action, it declared the color yellowBersihs signature colorillegal. Malaysian citizens were arrested for possessing Bersih literature or wearing yellow T-shirts. The police established roadblocks around the city and banned 91 Bersih and opposition leaders from entering the capital city of Kuala Lumpur. By the morning of July 9, the city was in total lockdown.

Then something remarkable happened. As Ambiga Sreenevasan, the distinguished attorney who leads Bersih put it, the Malaysian people showed that they no longer would be intimidated by their government. They chose to march, knowing that they would be met by tear gas, chemical-laced water cannon, and police batons. Even after Bersihs leadership was arrested, Malaysians of all ages, races and religions continued their Walk for Democracy through the streets of Kuala Lumpur. They locked arms, they sang their national anthem and We Shall Overcome, they blew bubbles and carried flowers. They were peaceful. The only muscle seen that day was the heavy hand of the police. Human Rights Watch later called the use of force excessive, the 1,670 arrests unwarranted, and the police attacks on marchers unprovoked.

This repression by Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak and his government drew international condemnation, and it also put a lie to Najibs two-year effort to portray himself as a modern, liberal-minded leader. More importantly, and of greater concern to Najib and his United Malays National Organization (UMNO) partythe main party that has ruled Malaysia continuously since independence in 19! 57is tha t it awakened a new generation of Malaysians. It is too soon to know whether the movement for electoral reform and the establishment of true democracy in Malaysia will be sustained. If it is, then July 9 will be remembered as a turning point in Malaysias history.

Just How Free and Democratic is Malaysia?

Why should a government be so afraid of a call for fair elections? Like his predecessors, Najib claims that demonstrations will lead to chaos, even though the right of assembly is guaranteed by the nations constitution and is commonplace in any true democracy. As for free and fair elections, Najib says that Malaysia already has them; if not, then opposition parties would not have achieved the gains they made in the 2008 elections, when they received 47% of the popular vote and took control of five states. Opposition parties counter that if elections truly were fair and free, they would form the government and not the UMNO-led coalition.

Political rhetoric aside, Malaysias electoral system has been analyzed by academics in Australia, Malaysia, the United States, and elsewhere. In addition, the state of Malaysias political freedom has been assessed by many international groups. The Economist Intelligence Unit, for example, labels Malaysia a flawed democracy in its Democracy Index. Freedom House says that Malaysia is only partly free. Reporters Without Borders places Malaysia 141st out of the 178 countries in its Press Freedom Index. On elections, the US Department of State Country Reports on Human Rights Practices declares that Malaysian opposition parties are unable to compete on equal terms with the governing UMNO-dominated coalition because of restrictions on campaigning and freedom of assembly and association. News of the opposition, the report says, is tightly restricted and reported in a biased fashion. Academics point to the Election Commissions gerrymandering, which creates highly imbalanced districts that favor the ruling party, where the number of! voters per electoral district can range from 7,000 to over 100,000.

Over the years there have been numerous credible reports of the use of phantom voters, stuffed ballot boxes, vote-buying, and abuse of government resources to attract votes. In Sarawaks state elections this past April, Prime Minister Najib was caught on video, blatantly telling a village gathering that his government would give them US$1.5 million for a local project, but only if they elected his candidate.

What Should Be Done?

Malaysias government may assert otherwise, but the evidence is overwhelmingly on Bersihs side. Malaysia is not a full democracy, and its elections are neither free nor fair. Malaysian citizens have awakened to that fact. Now the worlds democracies need to stand on the right side of Malaysias future. The United States has a multitude of interests in Malaysia, one of which is to help strengthen democracy and the rule of law. Human rights groups have condemned what they call the US Governments lukewarm response to the events of July 9. This is a moment when the United States, which named Bersihs leader Ambiga Sreenevasan an International Woman of Courage in 2009, can show the same courage and make a difference in the life of a nation.

Malaysian born Hollywood star Michelle Yeoh, who plays pro-democracy champion Aung San Suu Kyi in an upcoming film, has been deported by army-dominated Myanmar and blacklisted, an official said Tuesday.

“She did not have the chance to enter Myanmar again. She was deported straight away on the first flight after arriving at Yangon International Airport,” a Myanmar official, who did not want to be named, told AFP.

“She’s on the blacklist now,” a second official said, declining to say why.

The Malaysian-born former Bond girl met the Nobel Peace Prize winner at her Yangon home in December after shooting scenes with French director Luc Besson in Thailand for the production, which has been kept under close wraps.

The film is expected to be released later this year.

Suu Kyi was freed in November after seven straight years of house arrest, less than a week after an election that critics said was a charade aimed at preserving military rule behind a civilian facade in Myanmar.

Suu Kyi, who turned 66 this month, has won international acclaim for her peaceful resistance in the face of oppression.

In 1990 she led her National League for Democracy party to a landslide election win that was never recognised by Myanmar’s military rulers. She boycotted last year’s vote, saying the rules were unfair.

Yeoh, 48, a former Miss Malaysia, shot to international fame when she co-starred with Pierce Brosnan in the 1997 James Bond film “Tomorrow Never Dies” as a tough but beautiful Chinese spy.

She then starred in Ang Lee’s “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” — a Chinese-language martial arts epic that was an international hit — and “Memoirs of a Geisha” based on the best-selling novel by Arthur Golden.

Taib Mahmud has no Swiss bank account

Taib Mahmud said he has no Swiss bank account. Would you believe him? Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Abdul Taib Mahmud has categorically denied allegations by the Bruno Manser Foundation (BMF) that he has Swiss bank accounts, assets or investment in Switzerland.

He also made the denial in a personal statement in the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting after the question and answer session yesterday morning.

“Let me state categorically that I have no secret Swiss bank account, nor assets or investments of any description. None whatsoever (in Switzerland).

“Indeed, I have so stated in unequivocal terms in a letter last month to the president of the Swiss Federation.

“In my letter, I have specifically asked the president to confirm if she has allegedly ordered any investigation into the allegations by the BMF to the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority or furnish me with a copy of the application so that I can exercise my right to seek and obtain an appropriate legal redress.

“I also pledged to render my fullest cooperation to the Swiss Federation to swiftly bring the truth to light so as to nail down all malicious falsehoods.

“Let me reiterate here that the allegations by BMF are utterly false, evidently politically motivated,” Taib told the august House here yesterday.

Taib who is also the Minister of Planning and Resource Management and Minister of Finance said the BMF had a track record of making scurrilous and scandalous allegations against the state government for many years.

These include claims about the cutting down of 90 per cent of the state’s rainforests, although both local and international forestry experts have certified that 70 per cent of the state’s forests are still being preserved and sustainably managed.

“Therefore, BMF’s false allegations about my assets in Switzerland are a continuation of its malicious efforts to smear the state government, the state and the leaders,” he reiterated.

Taib said his attention has recently been drawn to allegations online in a “disreputable website” that claims the Swiss authority may investigate him and the nature and sources of assets belonging to him located in Switzerland.

“The allegations by BMF have since been used by local politicians to advance their own political agenda against me and the state government that I lead, which once again have received a strong mandate from the people during the last state election. As head of the state government and a member of the legislature, in keeping with the parliamentary practice and tradition, I am accountable to this august house.

“Therefore, it is only proper and right for me to make a personal statement to this august house in accordance of Standing Order 22 on the allegations by BMF, a foreign NGO not at all accountable to the people of Sarawak,” he added.

On Tuesday, Taib had said that he would make his statement on the issue as it has been highlighted by recent reports by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) which is also investigating the case. Taib added that the opposition was “barking at the wrong tree”.

“You will have a surprise (from me) tomorrow,” Taib had told the media after attending the opening State Legislative Assembly by head of state Tun Abang Muhammad Salahuddin at DUN complex here Tuesday.

Before the sitting, DUN Speaker, Dato Sri Asfia Awang Nassar had told the media that the opposition would table a motion over the allegation of the MACC against Taib at the ongoing DUN sitting. The opposition had picked up the issue after MACC chief commissioner Datuk Seri Abu Kassim Mohammad had confirmed that MACC was investigating Taib on the allegation of timber corruption in the state on June 9.

Australia and Malaysia 'to sign deal on asylum seekers'

A deal to send 800 asylum seekers in Australia to Malaysia in exchange for 4,000 refugees is to be signed on Monday, a Malaysian official has said.

The home ministry official said the one-off exchange of boat people would be formally agreed in Kuala Lumpur.

Many refugee claimants held at Australia's Christmas Island detention centre have expressed frustration at long delays and overcrowding.

Inmates have held a third night of violent protests there, police say.

A spokesman for Australian Immigration Minister Chris Bowen said of the deal: "It's close, we will be able to say more in coming days."
Shallow graves

The UN has previously criticised Australia for holding all asylum seekers while their applications are assessed.

The migrants are held for months at the Christmas Island centre, about 1,500 miles (2,400km) from the Australian mainland, and in other facilities.Malaysia is home to tens of thousands of illegal migrants and is not a signatory to UN conventions on refugees.

Australia currently has more than 6,000 asylum seekers in detention, originating from countries including Iran, Iraq, Vietnam, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan.

Last year, more than 25,600 refugees registered with the UNHCR in Malaysia to seek asylum, the highest among all countries where the refugee agency has offices.

Meanwhile, immigration officials said there had been "another significant incident" at the Christmas Island centre overnight involving up to 100 detainees.

"The detainees used improvised weapons and lit a number of fires in a number of locations within the centre," a police spokeswoman told AFP.

Refugee advocate groups said some detainees lay in shallow graves to symbolise their desperation.

"Asylum seekers in the Green compound have dug shallow graves in the courtyard of their compound," said refugee advocate Ian Rintoul, who keeps in regular telephone contact with detainees at the centre.

"Some asylum seekers have already staged mock burials and buried themselves up to their necks in a symbolic protest that detention is killing their bodies and their minds," he said.

Norway: Blast near prime minister's office in Oslo

The blast is thought to have caused damage to the offices of Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg and a number of other official buildings.

Norway 'al-Qaeda' bomb plot: Three arrested in Oslo

Three people have been arrested in Norway on suspicion of preparing terrorist attacks.

Unnamed Norwegian and US officials told the Associated Press that the men were members of al-Qaeda and had been under surveillance for a year.

They said it was not clear whether the men had selected a target, but they were attempting to make peroxide bombs.

The BBC's security correspondent says Norway may have been targeted because it has troops in Afghanistan.

"The Norwegian Police Security Service (PST) has today, July 8, 2010, arrested three people suspected of preparing acts of terror," the PST said in a statement on its website.

Prosecutors say the Norwegian case is linked to foiled bomb plots in New York and the English city of Manchester.
Twin plots

On Wednesday, US prosecutors charged five men in New York over a plot to bomb the underground system. The plot was foiled in September.

The New York plot also involved peroxide bombs, prosecutors said. One man, Najibullah Zazi, has already pleaded guilty.

"The charges reveal that the plot... was directed by senior al-Qaeda leadership in Pakistan," the US Department of Justice said in a statement.

One of those charged in New York is Abid Naseer, 24, born in Pakistan and arrested in the north-east of England on Wednesday. The US is now seeking his extradition.

Mr Naseer was remanded in custody by a court in the UK on Wednesday night.

Suspended former Fifa presidential candidate Mohamed bin Hammam begins his attempt to clear his name of bribery allegations on Friday.

Fifa's ethics committee has started a two-day hearing to rule on claims the Qatari tried to bribe Caribbean delegates to vote for him as president.

Bin Hammam pulled out of the race in the wake of the allegations and was provisionally suspended on 29 May.

He has promised to provide "convincing evidence" to prove his innocence.

"There has been a campaign waged within certain quarters," he wrote in a blog.

"Why was the Fifa ethics committee in such a hurry to suspend me before the Fifa election took place and then begin to search for evidence to find if I am guilty or not?" he added.

"Why have I not been treated in a similar way to others who, according to the Ethics Committee, received inducements?"

Phnom Penh - Police in Cambodia arrested a man claiming to be an adviser to US President Barack Obama and head of an international finance organization that stores its assets in caves and sunken ships.

Ray Dam and associate Soush Saroeun were charged with forgery Monday after being arrested at Dam's home in Phnom Penh. They were accused of forging documents alleging connections with HSBC Bank, the US government and the United Nations.

The pair had been operating a self-described international real-estate consultancy known as Asia Real Property out of modern offices in the Cambodian capital.

Asia Real Property's promotional materials identified the firm as a subsidiary of a group called the Office of International Treasury Control that claimed to be 'the largest single owner of gold and platinum bullion in the world,' holding cash and treasure in a variety of clandestine locations.

'Much of the treasure is buried in tunnels, bunkers and caves and in sunken ships,' the group said in an investment presentation. 'Further treasures are hidden all around the world.'

Dam is identified on the group's website as the 'sole arbiter ... of the Tripartite Gold Commission,' which was a post-World War II organization that searched for gold stolen by Nazi Germany and was dissolved in 1998. The website also said Dam was an adviser to Obama and his predecessor George W Bush.

Police said Dam and Saroeun had been advertising financial services to foreign joint venture partners in company documents claiming a connection to HSBC Bank. If convicted, they face a maximum of 16 years in prison.

According to an investigation report from police, Dam was born in Cambodia, fleeing the country for the US in the 1970s before returning in the early '90s. US embassy officials said they had been unable to confirm whether he holds US citizenship.

Officials from Cambodia's Ministry of Finance lodged a complaint against Dam and Saroeun after learning that the pair were operating without a real-estate licence. A government spokesman said Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen had ordered an investigation after learning that Dam had been posing as an adviser to the president of Cambodia's Senate

Ever since urban centres were formed in Cambodia, usually around centres of trade and industrythere has been an understanding gap between people living in the rural areas and people who became accustomed to life in the city.

Ethnic groups tended to stay in the rural areas, and because they have been separated from places like Phnom Penh, they are seen, and often see themselves as foreigners in their own country when they come to the capital city.

In order to facilitate a greater sense of understanding and community between rural and urban populations, Khmer Community Development, officially established in 2005, invited 750 youth from 7 minority groups in Cambodia to join each other for a weekend of dialogue, activities and developing relationships.

Ngach Pheaktra, a tenth grader from Mondulkiri province, took part in the camping activity and said that, because this was his first trip to Phnom Penh, he sometimes felt like an outsider.

“I feel strange walking along the buildings and houses here. They are all made of brick, while our houses back in our villages are made of wood,” he said, adding that his home doesn’t have too many mosquitoes and he rarely goes on difficult journeys, but his homeland does have mountains, trees and wild animals.

Ngach Pheaktra says Phnom Penh seems much more dangerous, with all of the vehicles moving around the city. “I do not feel secure at all when I am in Phnom Penh. I heard of robbery and rape,” he said. “Compared to Phnom Penh, my village is much better off and safer,” he added.

For Kham Sopheap, a 17-year-old and twelfth grader from Rattanakiri province who is part of one of the ethic minorities in the area, told Lift that she can hardly breathe in Phnom Penh, unlike here village where there are plenty of trees and therefore lots of fresh ait. As a child, she faced a discrimination from students who asked her why she even came to school when she could not speak any Khmer. By the time she was eight, however, she was able to speak Khmer well enough to converse with her classmates.

“There are some things I like about Phnom Penh and other things I don’t like,” she said. “I like it for its amusement parks and the Royal Palace, but I certainly do not like when Phnom Penh is too crowded.”

Lat Bunart, an eleventh grader from Ratanakiri, said that she feels like Phnom Penh is a place only for wealthy people, whereas her village doesn’t require people to be rich. “People in my village are so friendly and welcome the poor and the rich, but people here seem so busy with their businesses and work,” she said. “In our village we spend the day farming and have much more free time to enjoy life.”

Tuol Kork district authorities have given 18 families living in Boeung Kak lake’s Village 23 one week to dismantle their houses, accept compensation and relocate to Dangkor district.

Affected residents say their homes, which lie in the path of a planned access road to the controversial Boeung Kak lake development, will be bulldozed if they fail to meet the deadline.

Resident Ou Norleak, 38, said on Thursday that in a Wednesday meeting between deputy district governor Pich Keo Mony and the families, authorities said they will take drastic measures against those who resist.

“We can’t accept this because we have lived here for years,” Ou Norleak said. “Please Samdech Hun Sen, help your children. We will not be able to build a new house with this compensation.”

Huy Sokhon, another resident from Village 23, described the authorities’ actions as “dictatorship”.

In October, district governor Seng Ratanak told the families to remove their homes and accept a land plot in Dangkor district and 1 million riels (US$250), to make way for the widening of the access road R8 by developer Shukaku Inc.

Ek Yoeun, an official at the Tuol Kork district office, said Thursday that he did not join the meeting, but claimed the authorities had increased the compensation payout to 5 million riels ($1,250), up from the previous offer of 1 million.

“I heard some people asked for $50,000. The government’s policy is only to give a land plot in Kork Ksach village [in Dangkor district] and a small amount of money,” he said.

The Khmer Rouge tribunal’s Supreme Court Chamber will hear the appeal of former Tuol Sleng prison chief Kaing Guek Eav in March of next year, the court said in a statement Thursday.

The notorious jailer, better known as Duch, was sentenced to 30 years in prison in July by the court’s Trial Chamber after being found guilty of crimes against humanity and grave breaches of the Geneva Conventions. The court said his appeal hearings will take place “during the last week of March 2011”, adding that the exact dates and times of the hearings will be announced “in due course”.

“We expect that [the hearings] will be public,” court spokesman Reach Sambath said. “I think the court will always be full of people.”

Duch’s lawyers filed an appeal against the judgment last month, charging that their client falls outside the court’s mandate to investigate “senior leaders” and those “most responsible” for crimes committed under the regime of Democratic Kampuchea.

The appeal followed the shocking turnabout last year during closing arguments when, after accepting limited responsibility and essentially pleading guilty through months of hearings, Duch asked to be acquitted and released.

The court’s prosecutors have also appealed against the July verdict, claiming that judges had given “insufficient weight to the gravity of Duch’s crimes and his role and his willing participation in those crimes”.

They have called on the Supreme Court Chamber to sentence the defendant to 45 years in prison, reduced from a life sentence due to Duch’s unlawful pre-trial detention.

“There comes a point where the crimes committed are sufficiently grave and the offender sufficiently notorious, or in such a position of authority, that the highest sentence must be imposed,” the prosecutors wrote in their appeal. “That point was reached and passed here.”

41 civil parties have also appealed, requesting either that the court declare their claims admissible or amend their reparations award.

(New York) - The Cambodian government's use of its new penal code against a man who shared web articles with his co-workers is a huge step backward for free expression in Cambodia, Human Rights Watch said today. The man was quickly convicted on incitement charges and sentenced to prison.

Human Rights Watch called on the Cambodian government to amend the penal code, which went into effect on December 10, 2010, to remove provisions that limit the peaceful expression of political views so that the law fully complies with international standards.

"Charging someone with incitement for sharing web articles is a profound setback for free expression in Cambodia," said Phil Robertson, deputy Asia director at Human Rights Watch. "Cambodia's new penal code should have put an end to abusive practices, not encouraged new ones."

On December 18, Seng Kunnaka, a Cambodian employee with the United Nations World Food Program in Phnom Penh, was arrested on charges of incitement under article 495 of the new penal code after he shared an article with two co-workers. While the contents of the article are unclear, it was printed from KI-Media, a website that publishes news, commentaries, poetry, and cartoons that are sharply critical of the government, including a recent series of opinion pieces lambasting senior officials regarding a border dispute with Vietnam.

On December 19, the Phnom Penh Municipal Court hastily tried and convicted Kunnaka, sentencing him to six months in prison and fining him 1 million riels (US$250). December 19 was a Sunday, when the courts are normally closed.

During the last two years, more than 10 critics of the government, including journalists and opposition party activists, have been prosecuted for criminal defamation and disinformation based on complaints by government and military officials under the former penal code.

The new penal code places greater restrictions on free expression, Human Rights Watch said. Responding to media inquiries about the case, Cambodia's information minister, Khieu Kanharith, said: "Before, using the argument of ‘freedom of expression' and opposition party status, some people could insult anybody or any institution. This is not the case now."

"A dubious arrest so soon after the new penal code came into effect shows that the Cambodian government is ready to use its new legal powers to criminalize peaceful expression and political dissent," Robertson said. "And Cambodia's pliant courts seem all too willing to throw any perceived government critic in prison after a rushed trial."

Under the new penal code, incitement is vaguely defined in article 495 as directly provoking the commission of a crime or an act that creates "serious turmoil in society" through public speech, writings or drawings, or audio-visual telecommunication that are shared with, exposed to, or intended for the public. It does not require the alleged incitement to be effective for penalties to be imposed, which include prison terms of six months to five years and fines.

The new penal code also allows criminal prosecutions for defamation and contempt for peaceful expression of views "affecting the dignity" of individuals and public officials, as well as of government institutions. It makes it a crime to "disturb public order" by questioning court decisions.

"The new penal code makes it more risky for civil society activists to criticize corrupt officials, police, and military officers who commit abuses or question court decisions," Robertson said. "This is particularly troubling in Cambodia, where the judicial system is weak and far from independent, with court decisions often influenced by corruption or political pressure."

KI-Media is a controversial website that describes itself as "dedicated to publishing sensitive information about Cambodia." The website's editors, who have never publicly identified themselves, compile information from a variety of sources, including leaked and public government documents, Cambodian-language newspaper articles, and Chinese, Cambodian, and Western wire service reports. It also posts hard-hitting commentaries, blog articles, cartoons, and poetry from its readers - most of whom are sharply critical of the government.

A meeting with Vietnamese businesses took place in Cambodia on December 23.

Addressing the event, Ngo Anh Dung, Vietnamese Ambassador to Cambodia, reviewed the achievements and advantages in multifaceted cooperation between the two countries in 2010.

Two-way trade turnover in the first 11 months of 2010 reached over US$1.5 billion. Vietnam’s exports turnover to Cambodia gained US$1.3 billion, up 36 percent compared to the same period last year.

Currently, Vietnamese investments in Cambodia are worth nearly US$570 million, mainly in such fields as rubber planting, industrial crops, aviation, banking, services and tourism.

At the meeting, Vietnamese businesses expressed their hope that in 2011, the two governments will continue to simplify the trade and investment procedures to increase the value of trade exchange to reach US$2 billion.

Purveyors of classic Khmer rock'n'roll, The Cambodian Space Project plan to take on the world

It's been eight years since I last made a trip to Cambodia and had the chance to stock upon some Khmer sounds. Last week I was in Phnom Penh for a few days, and I must say, the capital is buzzing; it's a veritable hive of activity and commerce.

I went for a walk down Sisowat Quay on the banks of the Mekong at dusk one evening, always a good time to take photographs, and I thought for a moment that I had been transported back to Harajuku in Tokyo on a Sunday, when all the wannabe bands and poseurs play and strut to groups of dancing fans. Down on Sisowat the scene was bustling with groups of dancers, some doing aerobics to dance grooves, while other more exclusive groups focused on the latest K-Pop moves. People of all ages joined in the public groups or chatted while they watched the K-poppers.

In that area there are music stores but they don't sell Khmer music, so on Saturday morning I headed for the so-called Russian market, where among the tourist stalls and DVD shops, you can find vendors who have a good selection of different kinds of Khmer music. I stocked up on some Sin Sisamouth collections (the top musical icon of popular music), along with a compilation featuring his duets with top female singers from the '60s and '70s, Ros Sereysothea and Pan Ron. I found a tasty phleng kar (wedding song) collection, as well as songs by Meng Pichanda, who sings a local moody style, not unlike Thai luk thung music, called ramkbach, and some interesting Khmer rap.

Later I found myself in the back of a cyclo with one of Pan Ron's biggest fans, Srey Thy, singer with the new band The Cambodian Space Project and the band's founder and leader, Australian guitarist Julien Poulson. Srey, upon finding out that my son's relatives are from Buri Ram in Thailand's lower Northeast, launched into several stirring renditions of kantrum hits, which Cambodians call "Khmer Surin" music.

We were on our way to a birthday party for the band's Breton accordionist, during which I met the revolving personnel of this unusual music collective. The band plays covers of Khmer rock'n'roll from the late '60s to early '70, when Phnom Penh was a regional entertainment centre, but with a multinational twist. Many of the great Khmer musicians of the period perished during the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime but interest was revived with the Cambodian Rocks compilations of the '90s, and then by the US-based Khmer/US band, Dengue Fever. Unlike Dengue, though, The Cambodian Space Project is actually based in Phnom Penh.

Julien said that he originally went to Cambodia to make some music documentaries but was so taken with the singing ability of Srey after he saw her sing in a karaoke bar, that he decided to set up a band. Cambodian, French-Cambodian and French members make up the rest of the band. Interest was generated immediately, not only among the expat population but also among local Cambodian music fans. In the just a year, the band has played over 200 gigs in Cambodia, as well gigs in France and Hong Kong. In the new year, the band will jet off for its first major tour that will encompass Australia, Europe and the US. Total world domination can't be far way.

The band's first recording has just been released, a 7" vinyl maxi-single that features, on the A-side, a killer version of Pan Ron's hit, I'm Unsatisfied. The B-side features a catchy song written by Srey called If You Go, I Come Too. Julien says that he noticed that Srey is a natural songwriter, so the band usually plays a mix of covers and self-penned songs. He says that the single is the first vinyl to be released in Cambodia since the early '70s.

Here's how he describes the global process: "The single was recorded in Cambodian at Cambodian Living Arts - a small studio which boasts a collection of mics donated by Peter Gabriel. It was mixed by Lindsay Gravina of Birdland Studios in Australia. The mixes were sent to London, then the masters sent via Rough Trade to the Czech Republic. We picked up our 'band copies' from a little record store in Bretagne, France called Rockin' Bones. A round-about kinda production but very rewarding to launch this vinyl in Cambodia... not too many turntables here but the vinyl's thick enough to mash chilli and chop vegetables in the village kitchen."

I've just heard an advance copy of the band's debut album, the title of which, in translation from the original Khmer goes something like The Moon's Apsara Rides The Cosmic Golden Swan-Goose. Groovy.

The album's standouts are a distinctive cover of Pan Ron's I'm Sixteen, which features some great blues harp and the two Srey penned songs, Kangaroo Boy (great for pogo-ing to and I predict will go down a storm in Australia) and Have Visa, No Rice. It's a fun album that is likely to raise the band's international profile.

The Cambodian Space Project is not the first band to rediscover and play '60s/'70s Khmer rock'n'roll but it is the first one based in Cambodia. The National Assembly is now urging for its Thai counterpart to approved a series of documents necessary for both sides to move ahead on border demarcation.

National Assembly Nguon Nhel told a Thai parliamentary delegation here on Thursday that the approval of a series of border meeting minutes was crucial for stability between the two countries.

“Through the visit of Thailand’s National Assembly delegation, we would like to urge and to demand the National Assembly of Thailand to approve the minutes of three joint border commission meetings to eliminate the conflict between our two countries and two peoples, so that we can build up a peaceful and friendly border demarcation,” Ngun Nhel said.

Thai parliament has not ruled on the meeting in part due to extreme political instability there. But officials in Phnom Penh have continued to push the Thais to do so.

Earlier this week, the same message was delivered to a delegation led by Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Pirumya and Thai army chief Paryuth Chan-ocha.

Ngun Nhel’s appeal went straight to parliament, with the delegation led by Gittipot Viriyaroj, the head of the foreign affairs committee and chairman of the Thai National Assembly’s Thailand-Cambodia Friendship Group.

Gittipot told reporters on Thursday he would push for approval of the meetings.

“I will try to promote a full border resolution between the two countries,” he said. “Our only purpose is to bring development and progress to our respective countries.”

"All Khmer overseas have come together as one voice to support Khmer Surin in teaching Khmer language and safeguarding Khmer culture.”

A group of US Cambodians has begun looking for ways to encourage an increase in interest of the Khmer language in the Thai province of Surin.

That province was once part of a wider Khmer empire that encompassed parts of modern-day Thailand and Vietnam.

On Saturday, the Supporting Khmer Surin Committee held its first meeting, after a visit by some of its member to the province earlier this year. Members discussed the need to promote Khmer language in the area and the challenges faced by the so-called Khmer Surin people.

“There are many Cambodians doing business across the borders, so it will be easy for them to communicate,” said Srey Ayuthyia, the committee’s vice president, from Los Angeles.

Srey Ayuthyia said he had met with a Buddhist monk who taught the Khmer language and a number of Khmer Surin who expressed their need for more support.

While some Khmer Surin can speak Khmer, few can write it, but the there is a program that started four years ago that Srey Ayuthyia said he strongly supported.

The Supporting Khmer Surin Committee was only recently created, but its founders say they have already raised some funds to help their cause.

“We are not alone,” said Eang Bunthan, president of committee. “We are united around the world. All Khmer overseas have come together as one voice to support Khmer Surin in teaching Khmer language and safeguarding Khmer culture.”

Tribunal To Decide on Duch Appeals in March

“The public needs to know the final decision on the punishment of Duch.”

The Supreme Court Chamber of the Khmer Rouge tribunal is scheduled to rule on all appeals in the case against torture chief Duch in March 2011, the court announced Thursday.

The chamber must decide on an appeal by prosecutors to lengthen his sentence; an appeal by defense to release him; and an appeal by civil complainants for some kind of public reparation.

Duch was sentenced to a commuted 19 years earlier this year, but prosecutors say this was too lenient for a man accused of overseeing the torture and execution of more than 12,000 people at Tuol Sleng prison. They want a sentence of 45 years.

However, defense lawyers claim Duch was following orders of the regime and shold be released.

Tribunal spokesman Reach Sambath said the chamber had determined a detailed schedule and would begin informing interested parties and the public.

Latt Ky, a tribunal monitor for the rights group Adhoc, said the final decision must be well disseminated.

“The public needs to know the final decision on the punishment of Duch,” he said.

Survivors of the prison and those who lost family there say they want him sentenced for life, said Chum Mey, who lived through his incarceration at Tuol Sleng and has formed a support association for other victims.

BUENOS AIRES—Former Argentine dictator Jorge Rafael Videla, on trial for the first time since the country's Supreme Court rescinded his amnesty, was sentenced to life in prison by a federal court for the murder of 31 political prisoners in 1976.

Mr. Videla ruled Argentina from 1976 to 1981 and presided over the so-called Dirty War in which at least 10,000 people suspected of working against the regime, and perhaps as many as 30,000, were "disappeared" and killed, according to historians and human-rights groups.

After the country returned to democracy, Mr. Videla was sentenced in a landmark 1985 trial to life in prison for abuses committed during his rule. He served five years before he and other figures from the dictatorship were pardoned by President Carlos Menem, who said he was trying to close the book on a divisive era in Argentine history. The Supreme Court struck down the pardons in 2007, paving the way for new cases to be brought against officials from the dictatorship.

Wednesday's sentence was the culmination of a six-month trial in the city of Cordoba revolving around the case of 31 prisoners suspected of opposing the regime, who were rousted from their cells and executed following the coup that brought Mr. Videla to power. A three-judge panel issued the sentence, which it specified should be served in a common prison facility, as opposed to in a military jail or under house arrest.

Mr. Videla, 85 years old, sometimes appeared to doze off during the trial. He was defiant when he did speak.

"I don't speak of 'Dirty War,' I prefer to speak of 'just war,' " he said on Tuesday, asserting that his government had implemented a legitimate defense strategy against leftist guerrilla groups.

He took thinly veiled swipes at the government of President Cristina Kirchner, who has acted aggressively to bring former officials of the dictatorship to justice. "The enemies of yesterday achieved their goal and govern the country and they try to set themselves up as champions of human rights," Mr. Videla said.

Convicted along with Mr. Videla were 29 other security officials from the dictatorship, including former Gen. Luciano Benjamin Menendez, who headed anti-guerrilla operations in a large section of the country.

Obama signs bill to end Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell

President Obama has signed a bill to end the ban on openly gay troops in the US military.

Two years after he promised to end the controversial policy in his election campaign, the president signed the bill during a ceremony at the Interior Department.

Today, he said that the change would “strengthen our national security and uphold the ideals that our fighting men and women risk their lives to defend”.

Referring to the sacrifices made by servicemembers, he said: “None of them should have to sacrifice their integrity as well.”

An estimated 14,000 troops have been dismissed under the 1993 ban.

Last weekend, the Senate voted to repeal the bill.

However, it may take months before gay soldiers are permitted to serve openly and those fired can re-apply to join the military.

Military officials must consider and rewrite policies related to the issue over the next few weeks.

Then, President Obama, Defence Secretary Robert Gates and Joint Chiefs Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen must certify that the ban can be lifted without damaging the military.

Following this certification, 60 days must pass before repeal officially takes place.

Parents of gay suicide student will sue university

The parents of a New Jersey student who jumped to his death after his roommate allegedly broadcast his gay sex session are to sue his university.

Tyler Clementi, an 18-year-old student at Rutgers University, killed himself by jumping from the George Washington Bridge in September.

His roommate Dharun Ravi of Plainsboro, New Jersey, and Molly W Wei of Princeton, both 18, deny secretly recording him having sex with a man and broadcasting it online.

They have both been charged with invasion of privacy and have left campus.

Associated Press reports that Mr Clementi’s parents filed notice to sue last week and their attorney Stephen DeFeo said they will argue that Rutgers failed to implement or enforce policies that would have prevented or deterred the alleged invasion of privacy.

A Rutgers spokesman said that while the university was sympathetic to the Clementi family, it was not responsible for the student’s death.

Mystery remains over spy’s death

Police are still mystified over the death of British spy Gareth Williams, whose body was found padlocked inside a sports bag in August.

Mr Williams, 31, was a GCHQ code-breaker who was on secondment to MI6 at the time of his death.

His naked body was found locked inside a holdall at his Pimlico flat with the keys inside the bag. He is thought to have been dead for a week.

According to Press Association, police revealed today that he had visited bondage websites and had a £15,000 collection of women’s designer clothing.

They also said that a witness saw him at a gay bar in Vauxhall several months before he died and that he had visited a drag show a few days before his death. He also had tickets for two more drag shows.

Mr Williams is rumoured to have been gay, but police say they have not been able to speak to any of his sexual partners. He is said to have been intensely private.

Today, Detective Chief Inspector Jackie Sebire, who is leading the inquiry, said she believes Mr Williams was locked in the bag by another person and that police would continue to study his private life for clues.

Speaking at New Scotland Yard today, she said: “We remain completely open-minded about how he died.

“We are appealing today to someone who is out there to come forward and tell us more.”

No traces of drugs or alcohol were found in Mr Williams’ body. Experts found that he would have died after 30 minutes inside the bag from suffocation.

Police are seeking a man and a woman who visited his flat several weeks before his body was found and say that forensic evidence shows that other people were in the property.

His death is still being treated as suspicious and unexplained and an inquest will be held in February.

Federal inquiry into US gay teenager’s suicide

Federal education officials are investigating the suicide of a 13-year-old California boy who killed himself after suffering homophobic bullying.

Seth Walsh died nine days after hanging himself in his garden on September 28th. His family said he had endured years of harassment and abuse at school for being gay.

Last week, his mother Wendy accused the Tehachapi school district of ignoring her pleas to tackle the bullying.

She said his grades had fallen and that some teachers had even joined in the harassment.

Yesterday, a spokesman for Education Secretary Arne Duncan confirmed that federal education officials were investigating how the school district dealt with the issue.

Mrs Walsh said she contacted Department of Education investigators while her son lay in hospital in a coma before he died.

She said they spent two days in Tehachapi last week, interviewing teachers, administrators and students.

In October, the Education Department’s civil rights division told school districts that they must take steps to stamp out anti-gay bullying.

According to Associated Press, the department has the power to investigate school districts where bullying is said to be so severe, it has resulted in a “hostile environment” for students who are, or are thought to be, LGBT.

Mrs Walsh is being supported by the American Civil Liberties Union, which last week sent a letter to the school district on her behalf asking it to prevent another tragedy.

The ACLU says that at least 11 US LGBT teenagers have killed themselves after suffering bullying in the last few months.

UN votes to reinstate resolution condemning execution of gays

The United Nations General Assembly has voted to restore a reference to sexual orientation in a resolution opposing the unjustified killings of minority groups.

Last month, a UN panel deleted a reference to gays and lesbians in resolution introduced by Morocco and Mali. The vast majority of countries in support were African or Arabic.

Many of the supporting countries criminalise homosexuality and five treat it as a capital offence.

But today, the UN General Assembly voted 93 in favour of the United States’ proposal to restore the reference to sexual orientation, 55 countries voted against and 27 abstained. The assembly then approved the amended resolution with 122 in favour, none against and 59 abstentions.

The amendment passed last month called for the words “sexual orientation” to be replaced with “discriminatory reasons on any basis”. The resolution made explicit reference to a large number of groups, including human rights defenders, religious and ethnic minorities and street children.

It narrowly passed 79-70 and was then approved by the UN General Assembly committee with 165 in favour and ten abstentions. The motion condemns extra-judicial, summary and arbitrary executions and other killings, is voted on by the UN General Assembly every two years. For the past ten years, it contained references to sexual orientation.

Malaysian gay man gets death threats after support video

A Malaysian Muslim man who spoke out about being gay has received death threats and says he fears for his life.

Azwan Ismail, a 32-year-old engineer, made a YouTube video called ‘I’m gay, I’m ok’, in an effort to encourage other gay Malaysians to feel comfortable with their sexual orientation.

His video clip was part of a series posted by Malaysian activists and was inspired by the US It Gets Better project, in which LGBT people speak frankly about their own experiences growing up.

Mr Ismail told Associated Press that he was scared he was about to be killed and that his life had been threatened.

He was the only Muslim to take part in the project. Homosexuality is illegal in Malaysia but offences are not usually harshly punished.

He said: “My intention was not to insult Islam. I just wanted to represent gay Malays in this project. I hope these videos will help to create a more open society and more discussion.”

In the video, which has been viewed more than 140,000 times on YouTube in just six days, Mr Ismail talked about his faith and his sexuality.

One prominent Islamic cleric criticised him for “derid[ing] his own dignity”, while Malaysia’s Cabinet minister for Islamic affairs, Jamil Khir Baharom, said action may be taken to prevent more people viewing the video.

Mr Ismail said he was now taking safety precautions in response to the threats.

Five years of civil partnerships

Today is the fifth anniversary of civil partnerships in England and Wales.

The ceremonies, which give gay couples almost all of the rights of marriage, came into effect at 8am on December 21st 2005. Three gay couples in Brighton were the first to take advantage of the new legislation.

The very first civil partnership to take place was on December 5th 2005, between a gay couple where one partner was terminally ill.

An error meant that Scotland’s first civil partnerships were held on December 20th 2005.

Since 2005, an estimated 40,000 gay couples have entered into civil partnerships. London and Brighton remain the most popular areas for the ceremonies.

Last year, the average age for gay people to have a civil partnership was 41.2 for men and 38.9 for women. For straight couples, the average age at first marriage was 32.1 years for men and 29.9 years for women.

Currently, only gay couples may have a civil partnership. They cannot marry.

However, marriage equality campaigners hope to change this and will soon launch a legal bid to open up both institutions to everyone.

The coalition government has promised to work towards giving gay couples the right to religious civil partnerships but has stopped short of supporting gay marriage.

In a message released today, equality minister Lynne Featherstone said: “As well as benefiting the couples who have registered their unions, the introduction of civil partnerships has helped make a real, positive change in the way society thinks about lesbian, gay and bisexual people.

“As a government we’re committed to building on this progress, which is why we’re currently looking at what the next steps for civil partnerships could be.”
